GETHIN REPLIES: HOLD ON THERE BIT MUCH THAT, WHAT EVER! BRWYDR MAES GWENLLIAN WAS NO WHERE NEAR XMAS AND I CANNOT SEE ANY REFS ON WEB TO THIS DECEMBER COMMEMORATION? ALL SOURCES I HAVE RESEARCHED SAY FEBRUARY 1136 AND THAT IS CORRECT, IT FOLLOWED THE BATTLE OF LLWCHWR 1 IONAWR 1136 WHICH KICKED OFF THE WAR OF THAT YEAR ENDING AT BATTLE OF CRUG MAWR IN A WELSH VICTORY >
Sian Ifan Replies: Byron Huws, dont shoot the messinger! I merely placed a link up on my f,b. to a blog by Cymric Remembrancer Gethin ap Gruffydd. Neither Gethin, or myself, stated that we would be ''organising'' anything. Believe me, if we had been organising'' a commemoration, we would have publicised it well in many ways... Gethin merely gave today as the date for 'anybody'' who wanted to visit the memorial and Gwenllian Field to pay their tribute as a day to do so should they wish to do so as individuals. Gethin carried out the research on this to choose this as an appropriate day, so if you have a problem with the date, take it up with him. Myself and Gethin did go to pay tribute - as did other people we witnessed walking about the castle and at the memorial;. We, nor they, need anybody's permission to do so. As I have already stated, most of my historical work is concentrated o promoting the heroic history of the Owain Glyndŵr.War of Independence and enspiring the Cymry of today in regards to continuing that struggle and,, apart from another two çlose to heart' projects 'that I'm working on as books,, I leave the other wealth of information and promotion of our history to Gethin who has been an abled 'hedge teacher in the field for over 50 years.
You accuse me - or us of arrogance! I find it most arrogant of you to tell us, -and others, that we cannot, as individuals, go and commemorate and pay tribute to our Cymric heroes whenever we wish to. The worst thing we can do with our history is to lock it in an acaedemia box only to be studied by acadaemics. We, as Cymric remembrances and 'hedge teachers', for as long as we have breath in our bodies, will do our utmost to éngage 'the whole of Cymru in our heroic Cymric history and we do not need yours or anybody else's permission to do this.
HIST NOTE RE DATE OF BATTLE OF MAES GWENLLIAN, I HAVE THREE DATES, ONE THE 22 AND OTHER 28 FEBRUARY AND ONE MARCH 1ST WHICH I FEEL IS POSSIBLY A PATRIOTIC NOTION. HOWEVER, MYSELF IN TRADITION OF COFIWN COMMEMORATIONS TO BE HELD AFTER HISTORIC DATE I WOULD GO ALONG WITH ST DAVID'S DAY AS SUITABLE. AS FOR DECEMBER A RATHER FOOLISH NOTION AS ALL HISTORIANS CONSIDER THE BATTLE TO HAVE BEEN HELD FEBRUARY 1136. GETHIN.
AS FOR THE NORMAN RESPONSIBLE FOR MURDER OF GWENLLIAN NOTE HE NOW SEEMS TO REST IN PEACE SAD TO SAY, UNLIKE GWENLLIAN AND WELSH PATRIOTS WHO FOUGHT WITH HER WERE LEFT ON THE BATTLE FIELD TO BE RAVAGED BY WOLVES.
