A TRIBUTE TO MY FELLOW ACTIVIST, HUSBAND AND SOUL MATE GETHIN AP GRUFFYDD. APR 11 1946 - Sept 18 2025
Sadly, Gethin passed over on Thursday the 18th September following a long illness, he died at home surrounded by his loving family and will be missed greatly by family, compatriots and all others who had got to know know him well over the years.
Gethin was far from being an 'ordinary' man, he was a passionate Cymric patriot. He was born and raised in Merthyr Tudfil, a town steeped in rebellion but, Gethin, like all of his generation was not taught the rebellious history of that town or any other Cymric history in the classroom and his first ever encounter with Cymric history came as a punishment for being naughty in class at his primary school whence he was told to stay behind and tidy up some boxes of books and as he did so, he came across a book entitled 'Pull Up The Drawbridge' (I think that is what it was called) Gethin began to read it and found that it was all about the battles of the Cymric Princes against the Anglo Normans and, as he has said on many occasions as he recalled that moment, that was his 'Zardos' moment, the seed of a national awakening had been sown in him and a flame had been kindled that could never be estinquished throughout the rest of his life.
But this tribute is not meant to be a biography of Gethin's life, that has already been done by myself in the film Bamn Cymru which consits of a lengthy interiew that I did with Gethin where he reveals all about his upbringing, his school days, his political stance, the many patriotic movements that he established, and his numerous campaigns over the years, his imprisonment for organising the Anti Investiture Campaign and for organising the FWA and much more. You can find this film on my You tube channel see following link:
This tribute is to briefly show the multi-dimensional character of the man I dearly loved and respected; not only was he a passionate Cymric patriot and activist, he was absolutely 100% genuine in his patriotic beliefs and was more than ready to go the whole mile and spend every penny he possessed to rigorously campaign pro-activly to fulfil his ambition to see Cymru liberated and Cymric lands restored to the Cymric people once more.
A period in exile in Ireland and participating in National Commemorative events there had inspired him to establish the Cofiwn movement when he returned to Cymru as a means of educating the Cymry of our history by the holding of Cymric Commemorative events and educational field trips to important historic sites in Cymru. It was the use of the Irish Lily as a commemorative logo by the Irish that also spurred him on to establish the Ivy leaf as Cofiwn's logo and symbol of Cymric Remembrance.
Not only was Gethin proactive on the ground, he also opened copious blogs under the Umbrella of his main blog of GETHIN AP GRUFFYDD so, again, so get a full insight into what Gethin was all about, I would advise and encourage one and all to plough your way through each and every one of these blogs.
The 'personal' Gethin was my beloved husband and soulmate, we had worked close together on numerous campaign for 48 years, he was also a loving father to Mari, Rhian and Roisin, was the much loved grandfather of Gruff, Cai, Mabon and Iestyn and was a loving brother to Owain.
Below are a mere few photos of Gethin the activist and Gethin the family man. A great many more will be shown on screen during his funeral of which details will be revealed in due course.
This blog post will be added to and ongoing so, anyone who wishes to add to the tribute is welcome to do so, just contact me by messinger or by email on sifl@hotmail.co.uk
I have 100's of pics of Gethin the patriot and activist, and of Gethin with family and friends which I will be posting as a slide show in due course so, just keeep looking for updates.
A TRIBUTE FROM AN OLD COMPATRIOT OF GETHIN'S:
Like a hammer blow from the depth of hell, I have just received the sad, sad news about the death of that supreme patriot, Gethin ap Gruffydd / Iestyn. He was the last survivor of the epoch-making FWA trial of1969. I was living in London at the time of the trial. News about the court case, in the Western Mail, together with Gethin's numerous, inflammatory statements, which were often printed therein, persuaded me to join the London branch of Plaid Cymru, which was, indeed, a very revolutionary branch at that time….
The accused were charged with public order offences in February 1969, after which they were arrested during a, mercilessly, freezing, dawn raid. Then they were locked up, and kept, in strict, solitary confinement, until the trial began in mid-April. This, notorious trial, held in Swansea, lasted 53 days, and ended on the very day of the investiture!! Gethin and three other members were convicted; Cayo-Evans and Coslett spent 15 months in jail.
Literary Welsh giant and nationalist, Saunders Lewis, was present, along with others of his ilk, at the trial.
Gethin’s actions and the consequent, multifarious, reactions, inspired and still inspires many to grasp the reins that, will, through combined efforts, lead, hopefully, to the,long-awaited, liberation of Cymru.
Truly, like Cayo, Saunders, Coslett and Gwynfor, Gethin has joined the ranks of those recent freedom fighters set to be ingrained, immortally, in the hearts of patriots.
DYDD OWAIN GLYNDWR 2024...AC MAE'R RHYFEL DROS EIN HANIBYNIAETH YN PARHAU!
DYDD OWAIN GLYNDWR 2024
I gychwyn, newwyddion cyffrous iawn! Mae Cadw (o'r diwedd) wedi gweld y goleuni! Wedi dros 25 o flynyddoedd o ofyn drosodd a throsodd i Cadw, o gyfeiriad Llysgenhadaeth Glyndwr, iddyn nhw gydnabod Tywysog Owain Glyndwr a'i Rhyfel Fawr dros Annibyniaeth, ac wedi dros 25 o flynyddoedd o fod yn ddraenen yn ochr y corff tra'n ceisio i'w cael, o leiaf, i chwifio baner Glyndwr ar gestyll ac adeiliadau a safleoedd eraill o dan eu gofal ar Ddydd Owain Glyndwr, maent, eleni, wedi cyhoeddi ar eu safle ar y we eu bod am gynnal gweithgareddau i ddathlu Dydd Owain Glyndwr yn y safleoedd dan eu gofal ar hyd a lled Cymru.
Mae hyn yn newyddion i'w groesawu'n fawr ond mae'n rheidrwydd ar Cadw rwan i ddysgu y termau cywir, sef, Rhyfel am Annibyniaeth Cymru oedd/yw Rhyfel Owain Glyndwr ac nid 'gwrthryfel byr dymor'. Hefyd mae'n bwysig i ni gyd fel gwlatgarwyr a chefnogwyr o'r rhyfel dros Annibyniaeth i'n gwlad i sicrhau bod Cadw, a'r Senedd, yn chwifio baner ein Tywysog brodorol ar eu safleoedd ar Ddydd Owain Glyndwr yn flynyddol. Mae Llysgenhadaeth Glyndwr wedi gwobrwyo'r Senedd a baner enfawr wedi ei brodio ers y flwyddyn 2001, ac fe roedda nhw yn ei chwifio am ychydig o flynyddoeded wedi hynny ond, mae'n gofyn i pob wladgarwr sicrhau eu bod nhw, a Cadw, yn chwifio'r faner yn flynyddol. Hyd yma, mae Cadw wedi defnyddio'r esgus nad oes ganddyn nhw ddigon o bolynion yn eu safleoedd i osod baner ond, erbyn hyn, gan eu bod am gynnal gweithgareddau ar hyd a lled Cymru, medda nhw, bydd angen chwifio'r faner yn uchell yn ystod y gweithgareddau hyn yn bydd?
Tra ar y pwnc o chwifio Baner Glyndwr, mae'n hen bryd gwynebu'r ffaith moel NAD YW MACHYNLLETH YN HAEDDU CAEL EU ANRHYDEDDU A HAN ES OWAIN GLYNDWR! Er i Cofiwn a Llysgenhadaeth Glyndwr geisio ein gorau glas ar hyd y blynyddoedd ers y 1970au cynnar i berswadio a chynorthwyo tref Machynlleth i fanteisio ar hanes a chysylltiadau cyffrous Owain Glyndwr i hybu'r dref, ac er i ni gynnal Gwyl Glyndwr pedwar diwrnod o hyd yno yn 2004, ta waeth pryd ewch drwy'r dref, welwch chi ddim un baner Glyndwr yn chwifio - dim, hyd yn oed, ar y "Senedd-dy"!! ac, os ewch i mewn i'r adeilad, peidiwch a disgwyl gweld unrhyw arddangosfa ar hanes Owain Glyndwr a'r Rhyfel am Annibyniaeth! A peiiwch a disgwyl gweld 'Cleddyf y Genedl' y trysor unigryw a gyflwynwyd yn anrheg i'r Ganolfan gan Lysgenhadaeth Glyndwr yn ystor Yr Wyl Mawr yn 2004, mae y cleddyf yn cael ei gadw o'r golwg mewn un o'r ystafelloedd gwag lan lloft!
Os ydych am weld arddangosfa gwych ar hanes Owain Glyndwr a'i Rhyfel fawr dros Annib yniaeth ein cenedl, yna Amgueddfa tref Corwen i'w lle i fynd. Gellir cael blas ar Arddang- osfa clodwiw yno ynghyd a chyfle i ddarganfod ymhle mae 'Trysorau Cenedlaethol Newydd Cymru yn cael eu cartrefu erbyn hyn. Yn yr Amgueddfa yn ogystal, gellir gweld cerrig coffa Arwyr Glyndwr, maent wedi cael eu cartrefu yno wedi' i'r Ardd Goffa gael ei dinistrio yng Nghefn Caer wedi marwolaeth Elfyn Rowlands a'i chwaer.
Bydd Gwyl Dydd Glyndwr blynyddol Corwen yn cymryd lle fory, ar Medi 16 ac, fel arfer, bydd y dref yn llawn dop o faneri Glyndwr, felly, Corwen yw3'r lle i fod fory os am foddi eich hunan yn hane4s ein harwr cenedlaethol mwyaf - ac os am baratoi...yaa gwyliwch y ffilm isod ar Youtube, mae'n hen ffilm bellach, ac mae'r canwr wedi 'gwerthu allan' drwy fynd i Myddfai i ysgwyd llaw a chael te prynhawn gyda brenin Lloegr - twll ei din o! ond mae'r neges yn y gan a'r ffilm yr un o hyd.
FEL DWED Y SAIS..."GWNAIFF YR AFAL DDIM CWYMPO'N BELL O'R GOEDEN. AS THE ENGLISH IDIOM GOES...THE APPLE WILL NOT FALL FAR FROM THE TREE!
Fel dwed y Sais, "gwnaiff yr afal ddim cwympo yn bell o'r goeden".
Newydd dderbyn y llun yma o Roisin, merch ieuengaf Gethin, yn cynnal 'protest un ddynas' yn neuadd cymunedol y pentref mae'n byw ynddo yng Ngheredigion ar ddiwrnod Jiwbili Brenhines Lloegr Llynedd. Roedd Roisin yn ganddryll gan fod y mewnfudwyr i'r pentref wedi 'meddiannu'r Neuadd Cymunedol i drefnu gweithgareddau i ddathlu'r achlysur, felly, fe stormiodd hi ar lwyfan y Neuadd Cymunedol yn ystod un o'r gweithgareddau i roi llond ceg iddyn nhw. Da iawn ti Roisin. Petai pob gwladgarwr yng Nghymru yn dilyn dy esiampl, bydda 'na siawns i ni ad-ennill ein hannibyniaeth.
Dewch i'r esiampl yma ddeffro pob un ohonom i'r un ffaith amrwd yma, does dim angen unrhyw gymwyster arbennig i fod yn Gynghorydd Cymunedol yn eich cymuned ac os nad ydym yn barod i fod yn Gynghorwyr Cymunedol, yna, gellir fod yn sicr, bydd "y moch yn rheibio'r winllan" a bydd adnoddau ac arian cymunedol eich cymuned yn disgyn i ddwylo'r llu o mewnfudwyr a fydd yn mwy na pharod i lenwi'r bylchau, peidiwch da chi a gadael i hyn ddigwydd o dan eich trwynau.
As the English idiom goes... "the apple does not fall far from the tree".
I have just received this pic of Gethin's youngest daughter, Roisin, who carried out a 'one woman protest" in the community hall of the village she lives at in Ceredigion on the day of the English Queen's Jubilee last year. Roisin was furious that the English settlers in the village that had 'taken over' the village hall to organise events to celebrate the occasion of the English Queen's Jubilee, so, she strode into the hall and onto the stage at one of the events to voice her protest. Well done Roisin! If every patriot in Cymru followed your example and sprung into action in the same way, there just may be a dash of hope that we have a chance of winning back our Independence.
Let's what happened at this village awaken us all to the bare fact that there is no need for any particular qualification to become a community councillor and if we are not prepared to fill the positions, then you can be sure that the settlers will jump at the chance to fill the void so that they can take control of our Cymric communities and its resources right under our noses. Please, one and all, wake up to what's happening and take the necessary action to stop them in their tracks.

BATTLE CRY OF THE MEN OF HARLECH
Glyndŵr, see thy comet flaming, Hear a heavenly voice declaiming, To the world below proclaiming, Cymru shall be free: While thy star on high is beaming, Soldiers from the mountains teeming, With their spears and lances gleaming, Come to follow thee.
Hear the trumpet sounding While the steeds are bounding, On the gale from hill and dale, The war-cry is resounding: Warriors famed in song and story, Coming from the mountains hoary, Rushing to the fields of glory, Eager for the fray:
To the valley wending, Hearths and homes defending, With their proud and valiant prince, From ancient kings descending; See the mighty host advancing, Sunbeams on their helmets dancing, On his gallant charger prancing, Glyndŵr leads the way. Verse 2
Now to battle they are going, Every heart with courage glowing, Pride and passion overflowing In the furious strife: Lo! the din of war enrages, Vengeance crowns the hate of ages, Sternly foe with foe engages, Feeding Death with Life:
Hear the trumpets braying, And the horses neighing, Hot the strife while fiery foes Are one another slaying; Arrows fly as swift as lightning, Shout on shout the tumult height'ning, Conquest's ruddy wing is bright'ning, Helmet, sword, and shield; With their lances flashing, Warriors wild are crashing, Through the tyrant's serried ranks Whilst onward they are dashing: Now the enemy is flying, Trampling on the dead and dying; Victory aloft is crying, "Cymru wins the field!"
The Aberfan disaster was the catastrophic collapse of a colliery spoil tip on 21 October 1966. The tip had been created on a mountain slope above the Welsh village of Aberfan , near Merthyr Tydfil , and overlaid a natural spring.
